CRP test or C-Reactive Protein Test : Normal range

In this blog, we learn about C reactive protein test. It is common report now a days. CRP test is very helpful to understand disease progression & to understand how much treatment is effective.

  • What is C reactive protein
  • CRP blood test?
  • Normal range of CRP
  • Diseases in which CRP increases
  • How crp formed?

What is C-reactive protein?

C reactive protein is a protein part found in blood plasma. It is produce by liver against infection & present in blood plasma.

c reactive protein structure

Normally liver will not produce CRP. So, it is not available in blood plasma. If available than its in very less amount.

C reactive protein was discovered by Tillet & Francis in 1930.

WHAT IS CRP BLOOD TEST?

It is simple blood test, in which blood is drawn from vein in your arm, using small needle.

With help of CRP machine & utilizing your blood plasma, we get the value of crp level in your body. From that we can get information regarding any infection if you have.

NORMAL RANGE OF CRP

There are two kind of crp tests

  1. Standard crp test, that we are talking about
  2. High sensitivity crp test, which use to check heart condition. That will be discuss in next blog.

Normal range of standard crp

Normal – less than 10 mg/L

Mild – 10 to 26 mg/L

Moderate – 26 to 100 mg/L

Severe – more than 100 mg/L

DISEASES IN WHICH INCREASE CRP

  • Infection – bacterial, viral or fungal infection. In any kind of above infection crp level will be raise.
    infection
  • Inflammation in body
  • Autoimmune disease like lupus, rheumatoid arthritis
  • Cancer

HOW CRP FORMED?

This is most interesting & important part. Once you understand this, you understand the CRP report.

When we got infection

Macrophages (T cell, lymphocyte, neutrophil) will fight against infection

During fight with infection, these cells produces IL 6

Interleukin 6 (IL 6) will give message to liver to produce c reactive protein

Finally, C reactive protein synthesized in liver & found in blood plasma

This story suggest that

When crp level increases

This means more IL 6 releases

It means macrophage (Tcell, neutrophil, lymphocyte) fights somewhere

It means there is infection somewhere in body.

So, more crp level means more infection inside body.

GENERAL DETAIL REGARDING CRP

CRP starts raising within 4 to 6 hours when get stimulus.

It can be double at every 8 hours. It means in a one day, it can be increase upto 3 fold.

Eg.
If someone have high infection in body & today crp is 10mg/L. Than next day it can goes upto 80mg/L if infection is very high.

WHEN TO REPEAT CRP TEST

  • If crp is more than 10 mg/L than you can measure next day, alternate day or as per need.
  • If crp is decreasing from high level than not need to check next day. You can check it by second day or as per need.

This test is very much sensitive. So, value of crp increases speedily & also decreases speedily. So, we can understand the disease progression & also understand how much treatment is effective.
